This is a striking oval faux tortoise and sterling silver serving tray that is 20th century. The silver is in excellent condition and the plastic is in very good vintage condition only exhibiting age appropriate wear. This faux tortoise tray has two (2) silver "handles", one on each end of the oval tray and marked as seen in the photograph. The silver handles are only on the inner or upper side of the tray. The silver handles are not both inside and outside the tray, as can be seen in the photos.
The tray is approximately 20 inches long by 14 1/4 inches wide with a rim that is about 1 1/8 inches high. The rim height is the same all around the tray, the ends by the handles are no higher than the rest of the tray. The coloring of the tray is very impressive and really does give the illusion of being tortoise shell. There are a few light reflections around the rim seen in the photographs. The last photograph was taken to try to show the tray without the reflections, but still there are some reflections.
There are no maker markings on this tray and the silver is simply stamped "STERLING" making identifying a country of a origin and exact dating difficult. Usually silver pieces with just the word "STERLING" stamped on them are from the United States.
This would make a great bar tray or even a tray for a dressing table. Hors d'oeuvres could be elegantly served on this tray as well.
