An exquisite petite pair of art deco ( 1940c. ) beautifully made bookends. Upon each coromande wood piece sits a dozing silver plated cat. Of French origin and made in 1940 circa. Perfect for a small collection of treasured favourite small sized books - not really bookends for tomes!

Calamander or coromandel is a valuable wood from India and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). It is a hazel-brown colour, with black stripes , very heavy and hard. It is also known as Macassar ebony or variegated ebony and is closely related to genuine ebony, but is obtained from different species in the same genus; one of these is Diospyros quaesita Thwaites, from Sri Lanka. The name "calamander" comes from coromandel, referring to the Coromandel Coast in India from where it was exported. It is used in furniture, luthiery and for sculpture. The tree which produced this wood is now, I believe, extinct.

Size : 11.2 x 11.7 x 10.6 cm. each.
Weight of the pair:912g.

Condition: very good - these have aged remarkably well - the digital camera does pick up some signs of minor rubbing of the silver plate - to the human eye however - nothing really noticeable.
