This piece of religious art was done by P. Patriarcha Dec 11, 1806 in London according to the writing at the bottom of the piece. This is a reverse, print painting on glass with a printed title. The naive rendition of the Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus leaving for Egypt is so charming that the actual method of producing the image is not important. The scene is captured with a simple outline of the various figures and then colored with basic colors. The look of concern on the face of Joseph and the angel as they look behind them for reassurance of their escape, almost haunting. Notice the pyramid in the background by the donkey's head. The simple, naive or primitive portrayal of the scene makes this piece a wonderful example of religious folk art. The glass is 19th C and has various minor flaws and imperfections that should be expected from an antique piece of glass that is 200 years old. The outside dimensions of the frame are 11 x 15 inches.
