Beautiful deck of Arrow/Arrco "Discus" round cards, with a delightful art deco design of a marine animal (dolphin?) frolicking at sea. These round cards were first published under the “Arrow” name and would later be published under the Arrco name. The Dawson/Hochman Encyclopedia reports that Arrco was forced to discontinue the use of the name Arrow for legal reasons shortly after the company began.

This particular deck is of interest to playing card historians, because the Ace of Spades is nondescript in the sense that no maker is identified. This Ace is not shown in the Dawson/Hochman Encyclopedia at all, although it is one of the Aces shown at the listing on the World Web Playing Card Museum website. Also interesting is the remnant of the tax wrapper and tax stamp that remains. The stamp is canceled “A.P.C. Co.” and is a $.10 stamp confirming that the deck is in the Arrco/Arrow family and predates 1940. However, the gold seal on the wrapper is for “General Card Company,” also of Chicago, and tends to suggest that this deck was made after the use of the Arrow name was forbidden but before the Company settled on Arrco as its new name.

The deck has 52 suited cards, plus the Discus Joker. The cards measure 76mm in diameter, and come in the original box. Some sets of these cards have gold gilt edges, but this set does not.

The cards are in excellent condition, “as new” or nearly so. As noted, a portion of the original wrapper is still present. The box is another matter, structurally intact, with the top layer of the lid (with Discus information) missing, and a separation developing along the edge of what remains.
