Art Deco Made in France French Celluloid Religious Icon - Saint Bernadette Virgin Mary - Grotto at Lourdes | Crib Protector
From France and dating to the 1930s or so (Art Deco period), here's a celluloid icon - most likely a baby crib protector (protection against evil for the newborn) - featuring a center panel (metal) depicting the Apparition at Lourdes - Bernadette Soubirous kneeling before the Blessed Holy Virgin Mary in the Grotto at Lourdes. This type of souvenir item from Notre Dame de Lourdes would have been purchased and given to the mother and father of a newborn; it would be attached to the baby's crib so that no harm would come to the baby while in the nursery. While many families could afford French Dieppe Croix de Berceau (crib cross), crosses hand carved and embellished with the face/head of an angel, the common folk could only afford celluloid or even "of lesser value" pieces. This particular item would probably have been purchased at a modest price range. From top ring to bottom measures 5-1/2"; width is 4-7/16". Condition is excellent with no burn marks to the celluloid. Natural patina to the center metal panel with no loss to the stamping of the design. Just needs the appropriate ribbon - pink or blue which I will be happy to add upon Buyer's request.
