This is rare and highly sought after pearlware mug! Perfect for the railwayana/railroadiana enthusiast.

This delightful railway mug was produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1835. The mug features a hand coloured transfer printed design depicting a steam engine travelling through the countryside. The scene has some wonderful details; if you look closely at the train you can read the name plate ‘Fury.’ Notice the passengers in the carriage and the church and the mountains towering above. This is one of the best and earliest depictions of a steam locomotive that we have seen in pottery form.
The mug was made to commemorate the recent opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830. Interestingly, variations of the scene were produced by several different manufactures in period. Each variation features a locomotive with a different name.
‘Fury’ was a steam locomotive built by Fenton, Murray and Jackson in 1831 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England and ran on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR).

The base of the mug features the transfer printed manufactures mark reading ‘Railway, J. & R. G.’ for John & Robert Godwin were pottery manufacturers located in Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, England. There are only a few examples of this mug, each held in a museum. This is an important piece of William IV era engineering and social history.
