Who says vintage rosaries can’t be fun? This delightful Catholic rosary from the Art Deco era features bright orange glass Prosser beads that would be a fun substitute for natural coral, and lightweight aluminum components. I immediately think of a young person for this rosary, or someone who is young at heart!
The color and construction of the beads is quite wonderful. In 1840, the Prosser brothers developed a technique in England for manufacturing buttons by molding cold paste under great pressure and then firing it. This results in rich opaque colors that resemble porcelain and a seam of varying thickness around the middle. All beads are original and in excellent vintage condition.
The center medal and crucifix are nicely cast in aluminum. Now considered a less noble metal, aluminum was once more expensive than gold because of how difficult it was to extract. Commercial production, including the minting of religious medals, began in 1854. Full scale industrial production began in 1888 and continues to this day.
The center contains a lovely profile of Mary on the front with lovely carved roses beneath. Jesus and His Sacred Heart are on the verso. The stamped crucifix has beautiful linear designs that resemble pineapples when cross-hatched in the tips of the cross. It is stamped “France” on the verso. Flattened twisted figure-8 links are used instead of chain.
Fun, lightweight, and petite, this would make a wonderful Communion gift that will inspire a young person to prayer. Also ideal for carrying in your purse or briefcase. In excellent vintage condition, it comes boxed and ready for gift-giving.
