This ravishingly beautiful, silver enamel compact and chain dates to the Art Deco period. It is marked for sterling silver. I suspect that it mas made in Austria or Switzerland.
The octagonal compact is quite large measuring 2 and 1/16” (5.2cms) across and is 7/16” (1.1cms) tall. The accompanying , double chain is 5” (12.5cms) long. The entire piece weighs 70.8 grams.
The chain, designed to slip over a lady’s wrist consists of elongated and engraved, 16mms, links joined by small oval links. The chain is attached to a ring at the top of the compact.
The top of the compact bears an exquisite, enamel , engine turned design. Within a pink enamel octagon are painted blue forget-me-nots. The outer area is soft green with pink roses and darker green leaves. The design beneath the enamel creates a wonderful shimmer.
The sides of the compact are engraved with geometric designs. The silver back has fine line engraving and is marked ‘Sterling’.
The compact opens easily via a tab at the front. Inside the gilded interior is a perfectly intact mirror with a decorative surround. On the other side is the compartment for a tiny puff and powder. The powder compartment, marked ‘Metal’ has a removable lid, secured by a tab to stop the powder touching the mirror. The compact clicks shut.
When my eyes alighted on this piece I must admit that I just wanted to keep it. It is so very beautiful and in marvellous condition. It will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
