This charming gold filled, French medal or charm celebrates the life of St Françoise. I am dating it to circa 1930.

Saint Jeanne Françoise de Chantal (1572-1641) was beatified in 1751 and canonized in 1767. She was the mother of six children, three of whom died in infancy. She was widowed after only seven years of marriage. She founded the religious Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. On the advice of St François de Sales the order accepted women who were rejected by other orders because of poor health or age.

The medal is small but exquisitely sculpted. It measures 11/16" (1.8cms) across. It weighs 2.6 grams.

On the front is a fine image of St. Françoise with an angel. Dressed in her nun’s habit she gazes heavenwards towards the angel. Around the edge is inscribed her name ‘Sainte Françoise’.At lower right is the sculptor’s signature ‘Charl’.

At the top is a ring and a bail to hold a chain. The back is blank apart from a maker's mark.

This delightful medal is in excellent vintage condition, showing no sign of wear. It will arrive in a gift box. A perfect gift for someone called Françoise or the anglisised version Frances!
