This wonderful French Art Nouveau vesta or match safe was created by Charles Murat circa 1900. Charles Murat established his company in Paris in 1847 and I believe it is still in existence today.

The match safe measures 1 and 7/8” (4.7cms) by 1¼” (3.2cms) and weighs 17.6 grams.

On both front and back is a glorious raised design of swirls, waves , leaves and trailing flowers. On the front is a space with a discreet monogram.

The vesta opens easily on its hinge. On the rim is inscribed ‘DEPOSE’ – patented and a pair of crab French hallmarks for 800-900 silver quality. In the centre is the diamond shaped maker’s mark for Charles Murat - C and M with a blackberry between the letters. It snaps shut firmly with a click.

At the base is a striking panel for matches.

This fabulous piece is in fine antique condition with lovely soft patina. It will arrive in a gift box.
