Here is a pretty miniature Art Deco compact which has been enamelled with an arabesque design in turquoise and gold. The back of the case is inscribed with the name Tosca..
Inside the lid are a mirror and a compartment for powder. The hinge is not loose and the closure snaps shut and works well. There is a powder puff but no sifter. The case has previously contained product.
The collage photograph shows illustrations taken from contemporary ads for compacts, makeup and beauty products. In the early part of the 20th century cosmetics were applied discreetly. By the 1920s attitudes were beginning to change. Most cosmetic containers were made in France and the USA. Compacts were mostly of a smaller size, about 2 ins (5 cm) to fit into the small purses then fashionable. The major form of adornment was with stylized or geometric motifs, often with an oriental or exotic twist. Art Deco is an eclectic style and the range of influences found includes many sources and cultures.
Tosca Richelli compacts are extremely rare and very collectible. The company 4711 was founded in the late 18th century, the name being taken from the address of the premises in Glockengasse street in the city of Cologne. The fragrance has become a classic ever since.
