Onik Sahakian was literally a "Renaissance Man." His talents and abilities were diverse and he excelled in every endeavor he attempted. He was eccentric but prolific and he had a long relationship with Salvadore Dali. How many people can boast of that? He was a Russian Armenian who grew up in Tehran, Iran. He became a dancer and performed in over 100 performances all over the world. He mastered the piano and also began painting when he moved to NYC. He opened his own boutique "Onik Design" in 1968 in NY and his paintings were on exhibit at Rockefeller Center for over a year. He began to design jewelry in the 1970's and created pieces for Salvatore Dali and his wife and he even designed for Pat Nixon. His relationship with Dali flourished and he became very successful at painting by combining Dalian Influences into everyday scenes. His works are featured in major museums throughout the world. His jewelry is expensive since each piece was produced in limited numbers. They are difficult to find since they are kept in collections. I have a few pieces and everyone is a "knock out" as is this necklace. Onik Sahakian is an example of a creative artist whose skill exceeds many top tier jewelry designers but who, unlike the others, never achieved the highest level of success within the popular strata. The same situation exists within the purse world. I guess there are many other factors that lead to universal name recognition and success. The necklace exemplifies Onik's talent, skill and artistry. It fits below choker length and the medallion exceeds several inches beyond. Starting at the bottom there is a very dimensional filigree shiny gold octagon shaped piece that has an octagon backing and a smaller octagon piece above it. The smaller piece is 1/2" above the backing creating significant depth. Each piece has cut out work with swirls, curves and scrolling pieces . The top piece has an additional heavily engraved piece in which there is set a round azure lazuli stone. The piece measures 3" x 3". It is attached to tube like piece which is engraved with tiny diamond cutouts. Now this necklace may be part of Onik's kavacha jewelry collection which utilizes tube like pieces to protect the wearer against negative energy. On each side of the tube there are two large blue azure beads which have engraved and decorative gold caps. The last round bead on each side connects to a textured chain which seems to have double links that are textured. The necklace closes with a spring loaded ring. The back of the medallion is flat and the "ONIK" oval plaque is affixed to it. The length of the necklace is 19". The necklace is in great condition with a tiny bit of metal wear on the rim of the medallion. This necklace is a beguiling object of beauty. It has an aesthetic sophistication as well as being technically refined. And of course, it has a tremendous ability to astonish! What a piece! Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
